bombogenesis
Explosive storm formation
Bombogenesis is the rapid intensification of a storm system, specifically when atmospheric pressure drops dramatically within 24 hours.
Meteorologists use the term for storms that strengthen explosively, producing severe weather with high winds and heavy precipitation.
Such storms are informally called bomb cyclones: The bombogenesis event brought blizzard conditions to the Northeast.
