extratropical
Outside the tropics
Extratropical describes weather systems, storms, or regions outside the tropics—the zone between the Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn.
An extratropical cyclone forms in temperate or polar latitudes, driven by temperature contrasts between air masses rather than warm ocean water like hurricanes.
When a hurricane moves north and loses its tropical characteristics, forecasters say it has become extratropical.
