bomber escort
Protective fighter wingman
A bomber escort is a fighter aircraft assigned to protect bombers during missions.
Because bombers are large, slow, and vulnerable to enemy fighters, escorts fly alongside to engage attackers and ensure the bombers reach their targets: P-51 Mustangs served as bomber escorts over Germany.
The term can also refer to the mission itself or the pilots flying protection.
