bodhi tree

Sacred fig species

A bodhi tree is a fig tree of the species Ficus religiosa, sacred in Buddhism because the Buddha is said to have attained enlightenment while meditating beneath one.

The term applies both to that specific tree in Bodh Gaya, India, and to any tree of the same species: Cuttings from the original bodhi tree have been planted at temples throughout Asia.

Also called a bo tree. (Capitalized Bodhi Tree may refer to a specific named place or business.)
