blue ribbons
Top competition honors
Blue ribbons are awards for first place, especially at fairs, livestock shows, and competitions.
The image comes from the blue silk ribbon traditionally tied to winning entries.
Extended to anything considered best in class: a blue-ribbon panel of experts, blue-ribbon schools.
A blue ribbon also symbolizes awareness campaigns, particularly for child abuse prevention.
