block ice
Solid frozen slab
Block ice is ice frozen in large solid chunks, typically rectangular, as opposed to cubed or crushed ice.
Before mechanical refrigeration, block ice was cut from frozen lakes or manufactured in ice plants and delivered to homes for iceboxes.
Today it's used mainly for keeping coolers cold longer, for ice sculptures, or in commercial applications where slow melting matters: We bought a ten-pound block of ice for the camping trip.
