blindside hit
Unexpected violent collision
A blindside hit is a collision delivered to someone who doesn't see it coming, typically in contact sports like hockey or football.
The attacker strikes from outside the victim's field of vision—from the side or behind—often targeting the head or upper body.
Such hits are considered dangerous and unsportsmanlike, and most leagues now penalize them: He got a five-minute major for the blindside hit.
The term extends figuratively to any unexpected attack or devastating surprise: The layoffs were a blindside hit to morale.
