black square
Shadowy equal-sided rectangle
A black square is a solid black shape with four equal sides and right angles.
The term often refers to Kazimir Malevich's 1915 painting *Black Square*, a foundational work of abstract art.
In digital contexts, black squares appear as emoji (⬛) or placeholders for missing images.
The symbol gained visibility during the 2020 #BlackoutTuesday social media protest, where users posted black squares in solidarity with racial justice movements.
