black lead
Carbon writing material
Black lead is an old name for graphite, the soft carbon mineral used in pencil cores.
The term arose because graphite leaves dark marks like lead but is actually a different substance entirely.
Though pencils never contained actual lead, the misnomer persists in phrases like pencil lead.
