betrayal trauma
Relational violation injury
Betrayal trauma is psychological damage caused when someone we depend on or trust—a parent, partner, or institution—violates that trust in a significant way.
The term emphasizes that harm from close relationships cuts deeper than harm from strangers, because the victim must often suppress awareness of the betrayal to maintain the relationship they need: Children who experience betrayal trauma may not consciously register the abuse.
The concept explains why victims sometimes struggle to remember or acknowledge mistreatment by caregivers.
