beanballs

Pitches targeting batters

Beanballs are pitches in baseball deliberately thrown at or near a batter's head.

The intent is to intimidate, retaliate, or force the batter away from the plate.

A beanball can spark bench-clearing brawls and typically results in the pitcher's ejection: He was suspended three games for throwing beanballs.

The term comes from "bean" as slang for head.
