intentional walks
Deliberate free bases
In baseball, an intentional walk is when a pitcher deliberately throws four balls outside the strike zone to put the batter on first base rather than risk letting him hit.
Teams use intentional walks strategically—to face a weaker hitter, set up a double play, or avoid a dangerous slugger: They intentionally walked him to load the bases.
