batter's boxes

Designated hitting zones

Batter's boxes are the two rectangular areas on either side of home plate where a baseball or softball batter must stand when at bat—one for right-handed hitters, one for left-handed.

The chalk-lined boxes define legal batting position; stepping outside them while swinging can result in the batter being called out.
