barter economy
Goods for goods
A barter economy is one where goods and services are exchanged directly for other goods and services, without money as an intermediary.
A farmer might trade wheat for a blacksmith's tools, or a doctor might accept chickens as payment.
Such systems require a double coincidence of wants—each party must want what the other offers.
Most modern economies use money precisely because barter is inefficient at scale.
