barrel houses
Rough early juke joints
Barrel houses were rough drinking establishments, originally in the American South, where liquor was served directly from barrels.
The term evokes cheap, no-frills saloons catering to working-class patrons.
Barrelhouse also names a raw, percussive style of blues piano that developed in such places: barrelhouse jazz, barrelhouse blues.
