supper clubs
Private dinner venues
Supper clubs are private membership establishments serving food and drink, often with entertainment, that emerged during Prohibition as venues where alcohol could be consumed discreetly.
In the Midwest, particularly Wisconsin, the term describes a distinct type of casual restaurant featuring relish trays, Friday fish fries, and prime rib in a dimly lit, often kitschy atmosphere.
More recently, supper clubs have come to mean underground or pop-up dining experiences hosted in private homes or unconventional spaces: We found out about the supper club through a friend of a friend.
