bakshish

Middle Eastern gratuity

Bakshish is a tip, gratuity, or small bribe given to facilitate service, common in the Middle East, South Asia, and parts of Africa.

The word covers everything from legitimate tipping to petty corruption—a few coins to a porter, or payment to smooth bureaucratic obstacles: The customs official seemed to be waiting for bakshish.

Also spelled baksheesh.
