bad bounce
Fielder's tricky hop
A bad bounce is an unpredictable deflection that works against you—a ground ball that hops over an infielder's glove, a puck that caroms the wrong way.
The term extends beyond sports to any stroke of bad luck: We've had some bad bounces this year, but we're still in the game.
The opposite is a good bounce or a lucky bounce.
