backtracker

One who retreats

A backtracker is someone who reverses course or retraces their steps.

The term applies literally to hikers returning along a trail, but more often describes someone who abandons a previous position or commitment: The senator was labeled a backtracker after reversing his stance on the bill.

In computing, backtracking refers to an algorithm that explores possibilities by trying options and reversing when they fail.
