backdrafts
Explosive oxygen surges
Backdrafts is the plural of backdraft, a dangerous phenomenon in firefighting where a fire starved of oxygen suddenly reignites when fresh air enters the space.
Opening a door or window to a smoldering room can trigger an explosive backdraft as superheated gases ignite: The firefighters vented the roof to prevent backdrafts.
