back-channeling

Nodding while listening

Back-channeling refers to the small verbal and nonverbal signals listeners give during conversation to show they're paying attention—things like uh-huh, mm-hmm, nodding, or brief interjections that don't interrupt the speaker.

These cues encourage the speaker to continue and signal engagement without taking a full turn in the conversation.

The term also applies in diplomacy and politics to unofficial or informal communication channels used alongside formal negotiations.
