ducats

Venetian gold coins

Ducats were gold coins used across Europe for centuries, particularly in Venice and other Italian states.

The word survives mainly in informal use meaning money: I don't have the ducats for that.

Shakespeare's Shylock famously laments his stolen ducats.

The plural form appears far more often than the singular.
