athletic scholarships
Grants for athletes
Athletic scholarships are financial awards given to students based on their sports abilities rather than academic achievement or financial need.
Universities use them to recruit talented athletes for their teams.
In American higher education, athletic scholarships fund many students who might not otherwise afford college: She got a full athletic scholarship to play volleyball at UCLA.
The term often appears in discussions of college sports, recruiting, and the value placed on athletics versus academics.
