Pell Grants
Federal tuition assistance
Pell Grants are federal financial aid awards for undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need.
Unlike loans, they don't require repayment.
Named after Senator Claiborne Pell, who championed the program in 1972, they form the foundation of federal student aid: She covered tuition with Pell Grants and a part-time job.
Award amounts depend on financial need, cost of attendance, and enrollment status.
