assistant secretary

Second-tier administrator

An assistant secretary is a high-ranking government official who heads a division within a cabinet department, reporting to the secretary and deputy secretary.

In the U.S., assistant secretaries lead major policy areas: the Assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs, the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs.

The title also appears in international organizations and some corporations, where it may denote a subordinate to the corporate secretary.

In British usage, the role exists but carries less seniority than its American counterpart.
