antedating
Preceding in time
Antedating is assigning an earlier date to something than its actual date, or existing before something else in time.
A document might be antedated to make it appear older: The contract was antedated to qualify for the tax exemption.
In historical research, antedating means finding evidence that a word or practice existed earlier than previously recorded.
