animation cels
Hand-painted film sheets
Animation cels are transparent sheets of celluloid or acetate on which animators paint individual frames of a cartoon.
Each cel captures one moment of movement; when photographed in sequence against a background, they create the illusion of motion.
Before digital animation, every frame of a Disney or Warner Bros. cartoon was a hand-painted cel.
Original cels from classic films have become collectibles: She paid thousands for a cel from *Snow White*.
