airmass

Tropospheric pressure zone

An airmass is a large body of air with relatively uniform temperature and humidity throughout, formed when air sits over a region long enough to take on its characteristics.

Meteorologists classify airmasses by their source regions—polar or tropical, continental or maritime.

Weather changes often occur when different airmasses meet: A cold airmass is moving in from Canada.
