airgap

Physical security barrier

An airgap is a security measure that physically isolates a computer or network from unsecured connections, especially the internet.

The term comes from the literal gap of air between the protected system and potential threats—no cable crosses it, no wireless signal bridges it.

Airgapped systems store sensitive data: classified government files, nuclear facility controls, cryptocurrency wallets.

As a verb, to airgap is to isolate a system this way: We airgapped the server after the breach.
