X-plane
Experimental research aircraft
An X-plane is an experimental aircraft or aerospace vehicle developed for research and testing, particularly those in the U.S. military's X-series program begun in 1946.
The X-1 was the first aircraft to break the sound barrier; subsequent X-planes have tested everything from hypersonic flight to vertical takeoff.
The term sometimes extends loosely to any experimental aircraft: The company's new X-plane could revolutionize cargo transport.
