Venn diagrams
Intersecting set circles
Venn diagrams are overlapping circles used to show relationships between sets.
Each circle represents a category, and the overlapping regions show what the categories share: The Venn diagram showed that some students played both soccer and basketball.
The non-overlapping portions show what's unique to each set.
Venn diagrams appear in logic, statistics, and elementary education.
Informally, people reference them to highlight unexpected overlap: The Venn diagram of people who love opera and people who love heavy metal is surprisingly large.
