The Planets
Orchestral solar system
The Planets is an orchestral suite composed by Gustav Holst between 1914 and 1917, consisting of seven movements each named after a planet in the solar system and its corresponding astrological character.
Mars brings war, Venus peace, Mercury winged messages, Jupiter jollity, Saturn old age, Uranus magic, and Neptune mysticism.
Earth is excluded because the work draws on astrology rather than astronomy.
The suite remains one of the most performed and recorded works in the classical repertoire, with Mars and Jupiter being particularly iconic.
