Svengali

Domineering psychological controller

A Svengali is a person who manipulates another through psychological dominance, especially one who exploits a protégé's talents while controlling their life.

The term comes from a character in the 1894 novel *Trilby*—a hypnotist who transforms an tone-deaf girl into a singing sensation under his complete control.

The word now describes any sinister mentor or manipulator: He became her Svengali, directing every aspect of her career.

Often used for managers, producers, or romantic partners who exert undue influence over artists or performers.
