Stepford wives

Eerily perfect homemakers

Stepford wives are women who seem robotically perfect—submissive, domestic, and devoted to pleasing their husbands at the expense of their own identity.

The term comes from Ira Levin's 1972 novel *The Stepford Wives*, in which suburban husbands replace their wives with compliant android duplicates.

The phrase now describes any woman who appears to have surrendered her personality for an idealized domestic role: The neighborhood felt creepy, full of Stepford wives in matching cardigans.
