Spencerian

Flowing script style

Spencerian refers to two distinct figures.

Most commonly, it describes the ornate cursive handwriting system developed by Platt Rogers Spencer in the mid-1800s, once the standard for American business correspondence: She learned Spencerian script from her grandmother.

Separately, Spencerian describes ideas associated with philosopher Herbert Spencer, particularly his application of evolutionary theory to society—often called Social Darwinism.
