Special Olympian

Intellectually disabled competitor

A Special Olympian is an athlete who competes in the Special Olympics, an international organization providing sports training and competition for people with intellectual disabilities.

The term is respectful and celebratory: She's a Special Olympian who's won three gold medals in swimming.

Sometimes used loosely or disparagingly to mock someone's intelligence—a usage considered offensive.
