Scrooges

Tight-fisted curmudgeons

Scrooges are miserly, mean-spirited people who refuse to share wealth or participate in generosity.

The term comes from Ebenezer Scrooge, the cold-hearted miser in Dickens's *A Christmas Carol* who despises Christmas until ghosts reform him.

The word often appears around the holidays: Don't be such Scrooges—let the kids open one gift tonight.
