scrooge

Hoarder of wealth

A scrooge is a miserly, tight-fisted person who hoards money and resents spending it, especially on others.

The word comes from Ebenezer Scrooge, the cold-hearted miser in Charles Dickens's *A Christmas Carol*: Don't be such a scrooge—it's Christmas!

The term often carries connotations of joylessness alongside stinginess. (Capitalized Scrooge is the Dickens character.)
