S-wave
Secondary earthquake wave
An S-wave, or secondary wave, is a type of seismic wave that moves through the Earth's interior during an earthquake, arriving after the faster P-wave.
Unlike P-waves, which compress and expand material in their direction of travel, S-waves move rock sideways in a shearing motion perpendicular to their path.
S-waves cannot travel through liquids, which is how scientists determined that the Earth's outer core is molten.
The S-wave arrival confirmed a major quake had occurred.
