Richard I
Third Crusade king
Richard I was king of England from 1189 to 1199, known as Richard the Lionheart for his military prowess and courage.
He spent most of his reign abroad, fighting in the Third Crusade and defending his French territories.
His legend as a warrior-king far exceeds his time actually governing England: Robin Hood tales often feature Richard I as the absent but rightful king.
