Renaissance period
Europe's artistic awakening
The Renaissance period spans roughly the 14th through 17th centuries, marking Europe's cultural transition from medieval to modern times.
Beginning in Italy and spreading north, it revived interest in classical Greek and Roman art, literature, and philosophy.
The term now applies to any era of renewed flourishing: a renaissance period in jazz, the city's cultural renaissance period.
