Pathans

Eastern Afghan ethnic group

Pathans is an older term for the Pashtun people, an ethnic group native to Afghanistan and northwestern Pakistan.

The word derives from Hindi-Urdu and was common during British colonial rule: The Pathans of the Northwest Frontier were known as fierce warriors.

Pashtun is now the preferred term, though Pathan persists in South Asian English and historical contexts.
