Loya Jirga
Afghan grand council
A loya jirga is a grand assembly in Afghanistan where tribal elders, religious leaders, and other representatives gather to resolve major national issues—constitutional matters, questions of war and peace, or leadership transitions.
The term is Pashto for "grand council." These assemblies draw on centuries of Afghan tradition, convening when consensus is needed on matters too significant for ordinary governance: The loya jirga approved the new constitution.
