buffalo jump

Hunting cliff technique

A buffalo jump is a cliff or steep drop used by Indigenous peoples of the North American plains to kill bison by driving herds over the edge.

Hunters would stampede the animals toward the precipice, where the fall killed or injured them for easier harvesting.

The technique required detailed knowledge of terrain and animal behavior, and some sites were used for thousands of years.
