Napoléon complex

Height-triggered power drive

A Napoléon complex is a pattern of aggressive or domineering behavior attributed to insecurity about one's short stature.

The term references the French emperor Napoléon Bonaparte, popularly believed to have been unusually short—though he was actually average height for his era.

The phrase now applies broadly to any compensatory aggression stemming from perceived inadequacy: He's got a real Napoléon complex about his lack of education.

Also called short man syndrome.
