Mirandizing

Informing of rights

Mirandizing is informing someone of their legal rights upon arrest—the right to remain silent, the right to an attorney, and the warning that statements can be used against them.

The term comes from the 1966 Supreme Court case Miranda v.

Arizona, which established these requirements.

The officer Mirandized the suspect before questioning.

Police procedurals have made the Miranda warning familiar: "You have the right to remain silent..."
