Jayhawk

Crimson-and-blue supporter

A Jayhawk is the mythical bird mascot of the University of Kansas, combining a blue jay and a sparrowhawk.

The term originated in pre-Civil War Kansas, where Jayhawkers were antislavery militants who raided proslavery settlements in Missouri.

Today it primarily identifies Kansas athletic teams and their fans: The Jayhawks won the national championship.

Residents of Kansas are sometimes called Jayhawkers.
