Intermezzo

1939 Bergman film

An intermezzo is a short musical composition performed between larger sections of an opera, symphony, or other extended work—a brief instrumental piece while scenery changes or to mark the passage of time.

The term extends to any short connecting piece: The novel includes interludes that function as intermezzos between the main chapters.

In concert music, intermezzo names independent piano pieces of moderate length and reflective character.
