Ides
Ancient calendar marker
The Ides are the middle of a Roman month—the 15th in March, May, July, and October, the 13th in other months.
The word appears almost exclusively in the phrase the Ides of March, the date Julius Caesar was assassinated in 44 BCE.
That association makes beware the Ides of March a warning of impending betrayal or doom: His partners turned on him—it was his own Ides of March. (Lowercase ides is also standard.)
