Hunger Games

Deadly televised tournament

The Hunger Games is a dystopian novel series by Suzanne Collins, adapted into films, in which young people are forced to fight to the death in a televised spectacle.

The phrase has become shorthand for any brutal, zero-sum competition—especially one staged for others' entertainment or political purposes: College admissions has become the Hunger Games.

The gesture of three raised fingers, used in the story as a sign of solidarity, has been adopted by real-world protesters.
